Kakamega poliothorax

Grey-chested Babbler

A notoriously hard-to-find bird — and the only one whose scientific genus is named after the forest itself.

The Grey-chested Babbler (sometimes called the Grey-chested Illadopsis) belongs to the genus Kakamega. It lives on or near the forest floor and is very difficult to find, so seeing it is a real achievement.

Tips for finding it

Allow several mornings and work quietly with your guide in dense, damp undergrowth.

Forest birds are often heard long before they are seen. A guide who knows the calls is the single best investment you can make.
