Kakamega is the easternmost remnant of the great Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once stretched across Central Africa, and that makes it one of the most exciting birding destinations in Kenya. Many species found here occur nowhere else in the country.
Our birding tours are led by guesthouse manager Smith Likare, widely recommended by visiting birders as an exceptional guide who knows the calls, the feeding trees and the quiet corners where shy forest birds show themselves.
The forest is best explored on foot, slowly and patiently. Expect a mix of wide paths and narrow, sometimes slippery trails. Your guide can also help you arrange the forest entrance fee.
