Birding in Kakamega Forest is good all year round. As a rainforest, it receives rain in every month, but the pattern of wetter and drier periods affects trail conditions and wildlife activity.
Wetter months
Western Kenya typically sees its heaviest rains from around March to May, with further rain later in the year. The forest is at its lushest, rivers and waterfalls are flowing strongly, and many birds are breeding and vocal. Trails can be very muddy, so pack accordingly.
Drier months
Drier spells — often around December to February — make walking easier and are popular with visiting birders. Sunny days are excellent for butterflies.
Time of day matters most
Whatever the month, the best wildlife activity is at dawn and in the early morning. Afternoon showers are common, so plan your main outings early and rest in the middle of the day.
The best time to visit Kakamega is whenever you can — just be on the trail at first light.
