Corythaeola cristata

Great Blue Turaco

The largest turaco — a spectacular blue, green and yellow bird and a signature species of Kakamega Forest.

The Great Blue Turaco is one of the most memorable birds in Kakamega. Its size, crest and loud, far-carrying calls make it a favourite with visitors, and it is often seen moving through the canopy in small groups.

In Kenya, Kakamega is one of the best places to see this Central African species.

Tips for finding it

Listen for its loud, bubbling calls in the morning and look for groups hopping and gliding between tall trees.

Forest birds are often heard long before they are seen. A guide who knows the calls is the single best investment you can make.
