Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you visit.
Where exactly is Isecheno Blue Shouldered Guesthouse?
We are just outside Kakamega Forest, within easy walking distance of Isecheno Forest Station in the southern part of the forest, Kakamega County, western Kenya.
How do I book a room or a tour?
The quickest way is to message our manager Smith Likare on WhatsApp at +254 722 886 833 or email [email protected] with your dates, number of guests and the tours you are interested in.
Are meals available?
Yes. Home-cooked meals are available at modest prices. Let us know about dietary needs in advance and we can prepare packed breakfasts for early birding starts.
Is there hot water?
Yes, our rooms have access to hot showers — a welcome comfort after a morning on the forest trails.
Do I need a guide to visit Kakamega Forest?
A guide is strongly recommended, especially for birding. Forest birds are often heard before they are seen, and a specialist guide dramatically improves what you will find. Your guide can also help you sort out the forest entrance fee.
When is the best time to visit?
Kakamega Forest is worth visiting year round. Drier months make trails easier, while the rainy seasons bring lush greenery, flowing waterfalls and lots of breeding activity.
Is the guesthouse suitable for budget travellers?
Absolutely. We are an affordable, simple and welcoming base — clean, safe and comfortable — ideal for birders, researchers, backpackers and nature lovers.
How do I get to the guesthouse?
Most visitors travel via Kakamega town or Kisumu, then continue by taxi or matatu towards Shinyalu and Isecheno. See our Getting Here page for full details, or message us and we can help arrange a pickup.
