Monkeys of Kakamega Forest: A Primate Watcher's Guide

Black-and-white Colobus, Red-tailed Monkeys, Blue Monkeys and nocturnal bushbabies — where and how to see the primates of Kakamega Forest.

Kakamega Forest is one of Kenya’s best places to watch forest primates, and you don’t need to go far from Isecheno to find them.

Black-and-white Colobus

With their flowing white capes and long tails, colobus monkeys are unmistakable as they leap between trees. They spend much of the day resting and feeding on leaves high in the canopy.

Red-tailed Monkey

Small, lively and curious, Red-tailed Monkeys are often seen in active groups, sometimes alongside other monkeys.

Blue Monkey

Despite the name, Blue Monkeys are mostly grey with a bluish sheen. Look for them moving through the mid-canopy.

After dark

Bushbabies and other nocturnal mammals come out at night. Join a night forest walk to find them by torchlight.

Tips

  • Mornings are usually best for activity.
  • Move quietly and keep your distance.
  • Never feed wildlife.
