When Is the Best Time to Visit Kakamega Forest?

Rainy season or dry season? A month-by-month look at visiting Kakamega Forest for birds, butterflies and hiking.

Kakamega Forest is a genuine year-round destination. Because it is a rainforest, you should expect some rain whatever the month — but the season you choose shapes your experience.

The wetter months

Western Kenya’s main rains usually fall from around March to May. The forest is at its greenest, waterfalls like Isiukhu Falls are at their best, and birds are busy and vocal. Expect muddy, slippery trails.

The drier months

Drier spells, often around December to February, make walking easier and are a popular time for birding trips. Sunny days bring out the forest’s butterflies.

The real secret: time of day

Whatever the season, the first hours after dawn are the most productive. Afternoon showers are common, so plan your main outings early.
